i was reorganizing the docs on my laptop and stumbled across this which i wrote last november. it's really simple but i like it so i'm posting.
toy broken boy soldier
The Hunger Games; Gale/Finnick; PG
375 words
(Wanting to fix this beautiful broken boy doesn’t mean anything; no one could be immune to a smile that is so seductive even in grief.)
Title and cut text from "Broken Boy Soldier" by The Raconteurs. Unbeta'd. I do not own these characters. Spoilers for Mockingjay.
Sometimes, when Gale can’t spend any more time watching Katniss fall apart, he stops by to watch Finnick fall apart instead. It’s almost relaxing because Finnick means nothing to him and so when the crying starts he can just get up and walk away without any guilt. Finnick doesn’t acknowledge him, just sits tying knots in that rope of his, his fingers moving in the methodical way of the insane.
On the really bad days Finnick mutters under his breath, reciting simple rhymes to remember how to manipulate the rope into something else. On the not-so-bad days, the ones that could almost be considered good in some laughable reality, he just sits there, unmoving, a small smile on his face as he relives some happy memory, right up to the point where it turns dark.
When Katniss decides to be the mockingjay he smiles a little more but his knot-tying becomes agitated, frantic. Gale is busier but he still stops by, no longer thinking of Katniss but instead seeking out patterns that lead to healing rather than more heartbreak. He still doesn’t care, he can’t care, he cares too much already.

One day, when Gale is avoiding Katniss, trying to pretend that he’s not lying to her, Finnick surprises him by speaking.
“Would you rather I’d let him die?”
Gale blinks at the unexpected noise. “What?”
“Peeta. I saved his life, you know.” Finnick’s mouth twists into a wry grin, one that makes Gale shiver. “Well, he did die. I just brought him back.”
Gale looks away.
“I imagine it would be easier for you if he weren’t out there for Katniss to try rescuing.”
Gale kisses Finnick then, absorbing the words, and Finnick kisses him back for a few seconds before pulling away with a humorless laugh. “So that’s how it is.”
“I don’t-” Gale begins.
“Don’t worry,” Finnick whispers, his breath ghosting across Gale’s lips. “I have a lot of experience with keeping secrets. I won’t tell.”
Sometimes, when Gale can’t watch Katniss fall apart anymore, he stops by to see Finnick and lets himself fall apart instead.
